Week 20

Another great week in kindergarten!  Look what we've been up to:

In math, we are doing lots of skip counting by 5's and 10's and learned how to count by 2's using our mittens.

As writers, we have been talking about the importance of identifying what we are working on.  Because each writer is unique, we know that each writer focuses on different things.  We decided that working on one goal at a time is a good idea but that we can change our goal as we feel needed.
We are learning that reading is much more than reading (decoding) words.  We use the phrase "reading is thinking" to remind ourselves that understanding what the author is saying, is just as important and figuring out words.

We had a fun S.T.E.A.M. project with Mrs. Merrill's 2nd grade class.  The children were paired up and asked to make a 3D symmetrical snowflake.  They were given strips of paper to make shapes out of and lots of tape and scissors too!

Week 18

January is such a great month of learning in kindergarten.  We have good chunks of uninterrupted instructional time and the children are eager to jump into new concepts.  One of our highlights this week has been the addition of math folders during our daily math routine.  During this part of our day, our math leader helps us do our calendar, match the money to calendar date and count our days of school.  Now, the added layer is each child does the routine on their folder for more active engagement and differentiation.

Are you looking for ways to support your child’s learning at home?  There are a few skills we would like all kindergartners to have solid by the end of the school year.  Many children will be working on skills beyond these while other children could use extra practice and encouragement at home.

Letters:  Name all upper and lower case letters
Sounds:  Say all letter sounds, including short vowels and hard consonants.
Sight Words:  Identify all 25 kindergarten high-frequency words
Numerals to 100:  Identify, Write (without reversals) & Count to 100 by 1’s, 5’s & 10’s
Shapes:  Identify circle, square, triangle, oval, rectangle, star, rhombus (diamond), hexagon & trapezoid
Last name:  Write last name with all letters facing the correct direction and appropriate format
Continents:  Identify all 7 continents and which one we live on

Here are a few “life skills” that are also important for children to know and especially important as we gain more responsibility and independence in preparation for first grade:

Days of the Week
Zip Coat
Tie Shoes
Phone Number (all 10 digits)

Thank you for your continued partnership and for keeping a strong home and school connection!

Week 17

The children seem very happy to be back at school after winter break.  The familiar routines and connecting with friends is always comforting.  Read on to see how we started the new year and what our curriculum highlights are.

Math:  Teen numbers is our focus.  We are teaching the children to see teen numbers as a group of 10 and extras ones.

Writing:  We are writing How-To books.  This is a procedural kind of writing where the children teach their reader how to do something they know how to do well; by writing it step by step.  For example:  how-to pack your backpack, how-to go down the slide, how-to build a snowman, etc.

Reading:  We have introduced a new reading strategy - Flippy the Dolphin.  Flippy helps remind us that if we are stuck on a word and sounding out isn't working, try flipping the vowel sound (short vowel sound) so the vowel says its name (long vowel sound).  We are so impressed with the reading growth that has taken place in each child.

Social Studies:  We will begin talking about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  We have many surrounding activities that we incorporate into our curriculum to explore the diversity in our world.

Science:  Our next unit in the human body is the circulatory system - heart and lungs.

Snapshot of Next Week:

Monday 1/9 - Day 4:  Spanish & P.E.

Tuesday 1/10 - Day 5: Spanish & P.E.

Wednesday 1/11 - Day 6:  Music & Art

Thursday 1/12 - Day 1:  Spanish, Music & Library

Friday 1/13 - Day 2:  Spanish, Skating & P.E.  Please have all skate gear at school in a separate bag:  skates, helmet and all outdoor play clothes.  Parents are welcome to join at the rink both on and off the ice.  The more help we have the better!  Parents must have a helmet to be on the ice.  See you there!
