Weeks 12 & 13

Thank you for helping your child with our sharing of patterns from around the world.  Almost all continents were represented!  Our discussion was rich as we brought math, geography and different cultures together.

We have been reading the "My First Little House" series of books as we discuss life long ago and compare it to our lives today.  We even decided to churn cream into butter the way that Ma, Mary and Laura did.  We made corn bread muffins to go with it.

Our week ended with one of the most special days of the year... Grandparents' Day.

Week 11

This weeks highlights:

We spent time in the classroom talking about leaders.  We identified different reasons for having leaders and who some leaders are that we know.  This was a great conversation that led well to an introduction on the presidential election.  We used the basis of the book, Duck for President.  We talked about voting (being private, voting only once, making difficult choices) and gave each child the opportunity to have a private vote for either Duck or Farmer.  Duck received the most votes from our class.  We also discussed the importance of accepting results even if the one we voted for was not elected.

Number sense continues to be our math focus.  We have been using a variety of different math manipulatives to develop an understanding of "part-part-whole."

We hope you had the chance to see your child's newest published book on seesaw.  We are very proud of the authors in our class!

Week 10

We all survived Halloween week and all the festivities that surrounded this exciting holiday.  Our party was fun making halloween candles, playing bingo and making monster treats to eat.  We used the candy wrappers from trick-or-treating as a graphing activity the following day!

The other highlight this week was seeing our Biobuddies!  Our activities together surrounded the skeletal system.  We made bones out of model magic, played a dice game to build a paper skeleton and made an x-ray of our hand using q-tips.
