Week 5

The highlight of our week has been the 5 senses study.  Each day we have focused on a different one of our senses.

Hearing:  We kicked off this unit with our listening walk last week (see previous blog entry).

Taste:  We did a taste test of 4 different items (sour patch kid, marshmallow, unsweetened chocolate & veggie straw).  The children labeled the item either sour, bitter, sweet or salty.

Touch:  We made texture collages.  Hopefully you enjoyed hearing your child describe their work on seesaw.

Smell:  We used smelly markers and went from table to table smelling 12 different scents.  As a whole group we identified our markers and matched them with the correct scent.

Sight:  We used our eyes to examine items on our tray.  We closed our eyes and when we opened them, an object was missing that we had to figure out.  The challenge came when we took away two or three objects!

As a concluding activity... to use all 5 senses at once... we did a popcorn activity.  First, we listened and smelled as we watched the popcorn pop.  As we ate our popcorn we described how it felt and tasted.  YUMMY and FUN!

Thank you to those who have already filled out the conference feedback form and signed up for a conference time.  If you haven't had a chance, please do so by Monday.  Thank you!

Week 4

We have done a few culminating activities with shapes.  Making marshmallow shapes and tape painting were a few favorites.

We are learning about graphing by looking at how many letters we have in our names.
Thank you for helping your child with shape hunt at home.  Our collages turned out great!

Language Arts:
We have started introducing reading strategies through reading friends.  "Fish the Lips" reminds us to get our mouths ready to read by looking at the first sound in words.  "Eagle Eye" reminds us to look at the pictures to give us clues.

We are learning that during writing workshop we write the whole time and that "when I am done I have just begun!"

Rhyming and syllables has been our phonemic awareness focus.

We started our science study of the human body by learning about the brain. We learned that the brain sends messages to the rest of our body and that our brain is what helps us see, touch, hear, smell and taste.  Our new focus will be on the 5 senses.  Today we went on a listening walk around the Breck campus!

Social Studies:
We have been talking more about what it means to be a good citizen of Breck School.  We made a class book together and each child wrote and illustrated a page for our book.

We are concluding our beginning of the year formal assessments of each child and will share our initial observations with you during conferences.

EXCITING NEWS FROM MRS. WILLIAMS:  "My husband and I are expecting our first baby at the end of February!  We are thrilled to announce our future addition to our family."

Week 3

Magical is the only way to describe this week in kindergarten!

We have been reading all the versions of the the Gingerbread Man stories and comparing and contrasting them to the original.

As a class we decided we should make our own cookies to eat for snack.

When we went to pick our cookies up from the oven, they were gone!  But, there was a note that had been left as a clue.  Quick as a wink, we were off on a hunt around the school searching for our cookies. Our cookies had us running all over the school looking for them. Library...Spanish...Music...Gym...Nurse...and even Mrs. Bailey...

... and finally... they were back in our classrooms safe! We were able to enjoy our delicious treat together.  Such fun!

Homecoming was also a fun way to end the week.  The children were in their Breck colors full of school spirit.  We even got to meet the homecoming court and it was exciting to see who would be crowned the new king and queen of Breck School!
