Week 9

We are so impressed with the readers and writers in our classroom.  Hopefully you saw your child's first guided reading book brought home in their book baggie.  Please see the instructions given in the bag and make sure books, reading logs and book are all returned together by Monday.  We are continuing writing like scientists during writing workshop. Some children are even writing pattern books that are similar to books we are reading.

We are using manipulatives to teach number sense.  We are learning the concept of greater and less than as well as adding and subtracting using cubes (make a tower that is 2 more than 5).  We are learning how to see groups of objects in a way to count more quickly.  This is called subatizing and the children love this challenge!

In science, we have shifted from the 5 senses to the skeletal system. Ask your child how many bones a body has!  We did a skelton sorting activing using bones made out of cheetos and graphed our results (even ate a few too!).

We have introduced the children to the world map and globe.  We talked about where we live and located a few other countires children in the family have connections to.  We even had a special visit from Indigo's Mom and Aunt who did a special presentation about the holiday in India, Diwali - The Festival of Lights.  We made rangoli, lit a clay lantern, each child received a marigold and wore a bindi on their forehead.  What a special afternoon we had!
